Japan tour enriches learning
From navigating Tokyo’s bustling streets to experiencing the traditions of Kyoto and the history of Hiroshima, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School Japanese students discovered a whole new dimension to their learning on their recent Japan Language and Culture Tour.
For Years 10 and 11 Japanese students, the tour provided an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and immerse themselves in the language, culture and everyday life of Japan.
Reflecting St Paul’s commitment to personalised learning and co-curricular opportunities, the tour enabled students to pursue their interest in Japanese while putting their classroom knowledge into practice in authentic settings. Whether navigating Japan’s extensive rail network, communicating with locals or discovering traditional customs, students were challenged to apply their skills and build confidence.
The journey took students through Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, Kyoto and Hiroshima, with each destination offering something different. In Tokyo, students explored the futuristic Miraikan science museum and TeamLab Planets before experiencing the excitement of Universal Studios Japan.
In Kyoto, students delved into traditional Japanese culture through a city tour, handicraft activities and a visit to Gion Corner. Staying in a traditional ryokan also gave students a taste of Japanese hospitality and everyday life.
A visit to St Paul’s sister school Hinode Gakuen was another highlight, providing students with an insight into Japanese school life and the opportunity to connect with students from another culture.
In Hiroshima, students visited Peace Park and explored the city’s history and significance, adding a deeper perspective to their understanding of Japan.
Travelling by highway bus and the famous Shinkansen bullet train, and experiencing a range of accommodation and local environments along the way, students gained a genuine taste of life in Japan.
More than a tour, the experience was a co-curricular learning journey that brought Japanese language and culture to life, allowing students to pursue their interests, broaden their perspectives and grow in confidence and independence beyond the classroom.
At St Paul’s, students begin their Japanese language lessons in the foundation years of the Junior School through to Year 9 in the Secondary School. Students can then choose to continue their studies into their VCE years.
