Diplomacy in action
Year 10 students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School showcased their debating skills and global awareness at this year’s District 9815 Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA).
Hosted by the Warragul Campus with Rotary’s support, the assembly brought together students from Newhaven College, Marist-Sion College, Emerald Secondary College, Maffra Secondary College and St Paul’s Traralgon and Warragul Campuses to debate international issues from the perspective of an assigned country.
The St Paul’s Warragul delegation represented Japan, while the Traralgon team represented America. Students debated resolutions on international migration and development, the placement of weapons in outer space and the restitution of cultural property. The final resolution was announced on the day, giving delegates just 30 minutes to prepare their speeches and rebuttals.
St Paul’s Traralgon finished second overall, while the Warragul delegation received the Best Dressed Delegation award for its traditional Japanese kimonos.
As a community service organisation, Rotary creates opportunities for young people to learn, develop skills and broaden their perspectives. MUNA gave students practical experience in public speaking, critical thinking and negotiation while encouraging them to consider complex global issues from different viewpoints.
St Paul’s values its connection with the local community and thanks Rotary Traralgon and Rotary Warragul for helping make this valuable learning opportunity possible.
