St Paul’s spirit shines at state
St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School’s Warragul Junior School Teeball team has plenty to celebrate after placing third at the School Sports Victoria (SSV) State Championships, held at the Waverley Softball Centre.
Alongside their impressive results, the team was also recognised with the Spirit of Sport Award, a testament to their conduct throughout the day.
The championships brought together eight schools, divided into two pools of four, with each game played over seven innings or one hour. St Paul’s started strong, taking on Kerang Primary School in the opening match. The players quickly shook off any nerves, dominating in all areas of the game to record a commanding 23-0 victory.
Next up was St John’s Primary School, Euroa. This match proved more competitive, but St Paul’s rose to the challenge, showcasing sharp catching and ground fielding to secure a solid 20-3 win.
With two wins from two games, the final pool match against Marymede Catholic College, South Morang, would decide who advanced to the championship playoff. St Paul’s burst out of the blocks, leading 6-0 after two innings. Marymede fought back to narrow the margin after four innings, and by the final stages, St Paul’s trailed 9-10. Despite a spirited effort, the team was unable to add to their score, with Marymede finishing on top.
Although they missed the final, the St Paul’s players’ outstanding conduct and determination were recognised with the Spirit of Sport Award. St Paul’s Physical Education and Sport teacher, Mr Paul Boraston, was proud of the team’s demonstrated values and character. “Each player’s respectful conduct, skill, teamwork, effort and improvement was on display and was outstanding to see. As a result of this, the team was well-deserved to be awarded the Spirit of Sport Award,” he said.
Teeball is just one of the co-curricular activities at St Paul’s, which encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and try new activities. Through co-curricular activities such as teeball, students gain social, leadership, empathy and teamwork skills beyond the classroom.
